African American spirituals (traditional)

A body of religious folk songs developed by enslaved and formerly enslaved African Americans, emerging primarily during the 18th and 19th centuries. These anonymous compositions blended African musical traditions with Christian theology and became foundational to American Christian hymnody and African American worship traditions.
