Bede the Venerable

Anglo-Saxon monk and church historian credited with authoring or translating early Latin hymns and liturgical texts. Though attribution is uncertain, Bede is traditionally associated with early medieval English hymnody; Benjamin Webb later translated some attributed Bede material for Victorian Anglican hymnals.
