Bernard of Clairvaux

Medieval Cistercian abbot and mystic whose Latin hymns and spiritual writings profoundly influenced Christian hymnody. He is traditionally credited with authoring or inspiring several important liturgical hymns, including sequences and office hymns used in the medieval Church. His devotional theology, particularly his focus on the Passion of Christ, shaped the character of many subsequent Christian hymns.
