Francis of Assisi

Italian mystic and founder of the Franciscan order whose spiritual poetry and devotional songs, including the 'Canticle of the Sun,' influenced medieval religious music and lay spirituality. Though not a formal hymnodist in the Protestant sense, his vernacular sacred poetry established an important precedent for devotional song in Christian tradition.
