Scottish-English Romantic poet and hymn writer whose approximately 400 hymns became staples of English Nonconformist and Anglican worship, including 'Angels from the Realms of Glory' and 'Prayer Is the Soul's Sincere Desire.' He was a major influence on 19th-century British hymnody.
