Joseph Addison

English essayist, poet, and politician whose hymns and sacred poems appeared primarily in The Spectator. Though not primarily a hymnist, his poetic works "The Spacious Firmament on High" and other devotional verses influenced later hymn collections. His elegant, rational approach to faith reflected the sensibilities of early 18th-century English literature.
