English hymn writer and Tractarian clergyman best known for his passionate Easter hymn "Crown Him with Many Crowns" (1851), which has become one of the most popular Easter hymns in Anglican and other Protestant traditions. He contributed numerous hymn texts to Victorian hymnals and was influenced by the Oxford Movement's emphasis on liturgical poetry.
