Matthias Claudius

German poet and hymn writer whose contemplative and devotional hymns reflect Pietist spirituality and were widely adopted in German Protestant congregations. His poem "We Plow the Fields and Scatter" (set to music by Johann Abraham Peter Schulz) remains one of the most beloved harvest hymns in English-speaking churches.
