Richard Avery

American composer and lyricist who, with Donald Marsh as collaborator, created contemporary hymns and worship songs beginning in the 1960s. They pioneered the use of folk and popular musical idioms in church music, helping to bridge traditional hymn writing with modern styles. Their collaborative works influenced congregational singing in progressive Protestant churches.
