William Booth

Founder of the Salvation Army in 1865, Booth encouraged congregational singing and commissioned numerous hymns to support evangelical revival and social ministry. Though not primarily a composer, he was instrumental in establishing the Salvation Army's distinctive musical culture and hymnody.
